Credits/Backstory:

This was recorded at River Street Studios in New Haven in 1989. The late Bob Sheehan played drums, and then overdubbed the bass. Andy Jarcho played sax. I sang and picked, and snuck in a little Casiotone keys.
Listen to Sheehan’s elegant grooves and great tone. He was rightfully a New Haven music legend, and a most unusual character. – R.I.P.

Lyrics:

Wide awake, and the clock strikes three
I’m fightin’ my pillow
you’re sound asleep.

Tomorrow morning I will sleep at the switch
my head will nod, my face all a-twitch
come evening time I won’t got what it takes
but around midnight I know I’ll be . . .

Wide awake, tick-tock, tick-tock
there’s a baby bawlin’ down the alley
guess he’s got what I got.

Drank warm milk and watched TV
them late night reruns put a spell on me
tried every trick, I can’t get no sleep
I got all worked up just countin’ sheep.

Wide awake, and the night’s movin’ on
somethin’ creepin’ through my window
it’s the rosy-fingered dawn.

Let that coffee drip straight into my veins
for breakfast I’ve got scrambled brains
all day long I will lack what it takes
but around midnight I know I’ll be . . .

Wide awake, wide awake, wide awake, wide awake . . .
