Leave Me

Lonely man standing
in the slow autumn rain
head tilted upwards
to a bright window pane.
This man’s been my friend most of my life,
but he won’t say hello
he won’t catch my eye
he just stands there, in the rain.
Then he says:
leave me
leave me be
leave me
to my own company.

Behind that window
is good gone bad
a shining promise
everything he had.
Time stands still, a broken hourglass
there’s no future, only the past for my friend.
Then he says:
leave me
leave me be
leave me
to my own company.

The longer you’re in love
the less you understand
once solid rock
crumbles into sand.
She said --talk to me baby,
we can make it right--
he kept starin’ out the window
at the hot summer night, he just sat there.
Then she said:
leave me
leave me be
leave me
to my own company.
