Corbett’s Light

When you’re drivin’ out from town tonight
I know you’ll see Corbett’s Light
that bright, yellow ball in the eastern sky
will flash in your mirror when the highway curves west
it’ll follow you right out of town.

Corbett’s bright light over Corbett’s dance bar
spins on a pole, a parking lot star
gold globe, green orbits, with a cherry on top
you laughed when I told how it fell from above
it winked as we walked through the door.

Many a night at Corbett’s we danced
to white guys in big hats and mariachi bands
tangos and twistin’ and a slow, gentle waltz
and I went where I wanted in your slender arms
you lay down your head on my heart.

I don’t know why you need to go away
you talked and you talked and I sat there dazed
two cups of coffee near the empty dance floor
and I turned my eyes away
when you pushed through the door
swallowed by the afternoon light...

When you’re drivin’ out from town tonight
I know you’ll see Corbett’s light
that bright, yellow ball in the eastern sky
will slash through your windshield, burn a hole in your eye
it’ll flash in your mind ‘till you come back to me.
