Lyrics:

Last night I met The King of New Haven
he was buying rounds in a bar downtown
making nothing but friends, and searching for his queen.
Things got loud
things got rough
the king was proud
the king got a little tough
threw a few punches and caused quite a scene.

The royal heart beats fiercely in every man’s chest
every man is king, every man is the best
the last I saw The King of New Haven
he was licking his wounds
sittin’ on a bench
on the New Haven Green.

Down Wooster Street you should meet sweet Princess Marie
pin your hopes and your cash
to her royal purple sash
don’t hold back, Marie wants everything.
Your lonely plans
your petty schemes
will travel with Marie
to the land of your dreams
the palace gates will open and the choir will sing.

The royal heart beats proudly in every peasant’s breast
every man can know Marie, and every man can be the best
and Marie is wrapped in white silk
tied with a ribbon bow
a regal offering
butchered by some king.

I spent some time with The Queen of Shoes
she achieved great renown at the Goodwill on Crown
buying hundreds of shoes, at fifty cents a pair.
When she held court
in her S-R-O
she danced stately steps
by the stove light’s glow
modeling her collection of fine footwear.

The royal heart is trapped inside the human chest
a spirit from beyond, in a prison made of flesh
And the Queen of Shoes is no longer here
broke a heel, fell down the stairs
no longer dancing on air.
