Credits/Backstory:

This song first appeared on my Cassette/Album “WhyDoYouMakeMeBlue” (1991) This particular recording was made in 2001, and it’s an outtake from “Bones’n‘Clones,” but it reappeared on an anthology disc, “Wide Awake In My Head,” in 2004. It’s been performed live hundreds of times by many musicians, but this particular track features Kriss Santala, harmony vocal, Jim Chapdelaine, guitar, Jon Peckman, drums, Tracy Walton, upright bass, and my high-school pal Larry Treadwell on mandolin.

Lyrics:

The most beautiful woman I know
cannot be had
she’s a secret smile on an ancient face
she’s a photograph
she’s a brand new dawn, a rising sun
she’s a withered rose
she’s a restless dream, deja vu
she comes and goes
she comes and goes.

The most beautiful woman I know
I’ve never had
while I cling to her sisters she shadow dances
beyond my grasp
when I follow her up to the mountain top
she’s the river below
from the valley floor she’s the shifting sky
she comes and goes
she comes and goes

I believe someday we’ll meet
in another land
we’ll rise and fall, we’ll have it all
we’ll go hand in hand
until that time of peace and love
this much I know
I’ll spend my days wondering why
she comes and goes
she comes and goes….
